South Africa’s Upcoming Artists: Kailin Pillay
Posted by Matt Cryer on Friday, September 30, 2011

In the new segment of Global Edge Media, South Africa’s Upcoming Artists, Kailin Pillay, a 19 years old charismatic pop singer, will hopefully start us off with a bang. Kailin, who recently released his single Can’t Let You Go on the website www.reverbnation.com, will be releasing his new single within the next week, The Power of One. We sat down with Kailen to talk to him about his music.
Kailin as a South African Artist, what made you so interested in music?
Well you know if I had to say, it has to all go back to my dad in the beginning, because my dad has been involved in the industry and some of his passion and talent has hopefully rubbed off on me.
Your father, who is Kreesan Pillay, was a popular artist in the late 90’s, do you plan on following in his footsteps?
Ya’ my dad’s music goes a while back, he was one of the bigger South African Artists…My dad’s footsteps? Well yes, kind of, and then want to go one further too.
So you have always loved music?
Yes! Definitely! Music has always been the passion and where my talent is. So ya’ it’s definitely what I want to follow.
And what would your inspiration be? Obviously your dad is a great part of that already.
Ya, my dad has definitely played a major role in my music, but I mean people like the Beatles and Michael Jackson, and those types of unbelievable musicians, have really just rubbed off on me.
So you obviously really like the rock and pop scene?
Well ya its strange you know, I have a very odd taste in music, like one minute it’s Michael Buble, one minute its Slipknot, one minute its Greenday the next it can be anything. When it comes to music I’m really versatile, like what I listen too is really diverse.
So with that I was going to ask, what are your favourite bands?
The Beatles, Maroon 5, One Republic, Greenday…there’s a lot. [Laughs]
Now being versatile that means you listen to other types of music as well?
Ya I mean I listen to everything from Swing to Rap, to Lil Wayne! I know you love Lil Wayne!! [Laughs]
“Ya! Now you got me man!!” [Laughs] I KNOW you a big Lil Wayne fan!
Okay but at this point that’s what you listen to, but if you classify yourself, what is your genre?
It would be pop, or pop rock, ya.
So have you recorded any of your own music?
I have been recording, nothing professional as of yet, but I have a little Studio set up at home and Ive been doing my own recording. Everything is written and produced by myself.
With regards to your first song, titled, Can’t Let You Go can I ask what it was inspired by?
Kailin casually laughs this off.- Ya it was inspired by an ex-girlfriend of mine, that played a significant role in my life. I mean lots of inspiration has been drawn from that experience… the good, the bad and the ugly.
A good song came out of it so that must be productive right? Painful but productive?
[Laughs] Exactly! I like that!
So are there any girls right now? Any new inspiration?
Well you know I’m hoping the music inspires the girls, um, to come and inspire me!!
You also play the drums? Can you do both at the same time? Pretty much the only guy who has done that recently is Phil Collins!
Ya I can!! Well you know I think it’s a good party trick, you don’t see too much of that.
So you have drums, you got the voice, is there a band right now?
Well it’s not much of a band; it’s more just a group of guys that I jam with. They good mates I just do my thing with, we get our music together, and play together, but no band as of yet.
Are there any upcoming songs you will be releasing you want to tell us about?
Well there’s this one really cool song, at the moment called the Power of One that I’m really excited about, it’s more of a rocky tune, a catchier tune than the previous one. It’s not about love and heartbreak, and that kinda thing; it’s just one of those songs about having a good time. Hopefully that will be out by the end of the week so you guys can check that out.
