Tablet computers are fast becoming the new “must have” technology tool. They are used in schools, at home, the office and even in hospitals. The functionality of a personal computer in a device a tenth of the size, allows tablets to be carried around and perform functions that were previously unthought-of. With the announcement of two new tablets in the last two weeks, by both Google and Microsoft, there’s no time like the “now time” to learn how to chose your tablet.

The two questions to ask yourself when buying any technology is: How can It improve my life? And how can I get what I want from the device at the lowest possible cost?

Here are your options:

Microsoft Surface

The Microsoft Surface is for those who live business. With useful add-ons like a back stand and a flip open keyboard, the Surface becomes the best way to get the functionality of a laptop in the convenience of a tablet. Its main hope rests on its launch with Windows 8 operating system, where it will play a big part in connecting all your documents and files between your computer, phone and tablet. This Tablet won’t look out of place at a business meeting or working lunch. The Surface should be available with the Windows 8 launch at the end of the year, a price is so far unconfirmed.

Samsung Galaxy Tab

The Galaxy is great because it’s an extension of you. Available in a number of models, including 7 inch, 10 inch and a hybrid mix of Smartphone and Tablet; you can always find a Galaxy to suit your style and wallet. As the flagship Android tablet currently on the market, it allows the best options for customising your tablets layout to look just like you want it. It lacks the cleanliness and class of the ipad, and the price tag of the nexus, but brings a solid all round usefulness to those who just want an all round tablet. Definitely won’t look out of place anywhere in public. The Galaxy range is available now from any major technology retailer for around R4000 -R9000.

Google Nexus 7 Tab

The Google Nexus 7 was made for you to be social. It offers social features not found on any other tablet like a dedicated front face camera for video chat, a virtual assistant to help you manage your files and a high definition display bettered only by the ipad. The nexus does lack a rear camera and a SD card slot for extending the memory but neither of these is a big factor when you consider that the Nexus is one of the fastest tablets at the lowest price. Expect to see this tablet a lot this summer, especially on university campuses and in the hands of young adults. The nexus will be available from early August for around R2000.

Apple Ipad

The daddy boss of tablets at the moment, the ipad is by far the most popular tablet in the world and the one gadget that most young adults crave. Its popularity comes from a clean and controlled display which does what it needs to do with minimum fuss and maximum sexiness. The newest model brings the best display on any mobile device improving your all round media experience. This tablet is for people who want to be seen and known. The price tag, like the Galaxy series, may see people prefer cheaper models like the nexus but the class and legacy attached to Apple and its products will make sure that it will remain a status symbol. The ipad is available now at any major technology retailer for around R4000- R9500.
