Looking from the outside in, the field of journalism, especially hard news journalism may be perceived as a man’s world. However South African journalist Nikiwe Bikitsha is making waves. The 34 year old resident of Johannesburg is quickly becoming the image of a modern role model for aspiring journalists not only nationwide, but worldwide too.

Growing up in Cape Town, Nikiwe began her news career at 567 Cape Talk Radio and ever since she has supported a very successful career. Moving through the radio broadcast world Nikiwe also held a position at SAFM and managed a news team at Talk Radio 702. However, Nikiwe did not limit herself to only one news medium.

In addition to radio, we may perhaps best recognise Nikiwe for her position as prime time co-anchor on DSTV’s E-News channel. In addition to this Nikiwe adds a multitude of credits to her TV career, including an anchor position on Interface and CNBC Africa and better still, co-host and co-producer of Africa Inc. Nikiwe is also no stranger to print media either, writing a social commentary column for newspaper, the Mail and Guardian.  It is through these career feats that Nikiwe has made a name for herself and been recognised accordingly.

In 2006 she was awarded the MTN Women in the Media nomination and awarded the title for the Rising Star category. Most recently, Nikiwe has been awarded the international Hubert Humphrey Fellowship and in August of this year she will take her place in the programme in the United States.

With credits like this, it is no wonder Nikiwe Bikitsha is the name on ever young journalist’s lips. Without a doubt she is a role model of note, proving that with hard work and a passion for your career, great things are possible.
