The Golden Lions, Johannesburg’s provincial rugby franchise, have turned down a lucrative offer from Stadium Management South Africa (SMSA) to host the franchises entire Currie Cup and super rugby matches at their Soccer City complex. It was suppose to be so different. It started out as a weekend to savour with Bafana Bafana needing to win against lowly Sierra Leone and the Springboks taking on a wobbly Australian side coming off a recent defeat by Ireland, but it ended like a nightmare and in the aftermath it’s been blamed on two people.

Pieter DeVilliers tonight named his squad for the World Cup to be held in New Zealand in just over 17 days time. The squad held no real surprises, except for the exclusion of Lwazi Mvovo in favour of Odwa Ndungani, with 18 members of the squad veterans from the last World Cup winning campaign. The Springboks made it 8 loses out of in their last 9 tri-nations tests but did a lot better than the last few weeks as they went down to a determined and better travelling Australia. It was a tight marginof defeat but one that leaves many questions for Peter De Villiers to ponder ahead of next weeks clash against New Zealand.
