City end 44 year drought

Posted by Kyle A. Zeeman on Sunday, May 13, 2012 Under: Football

A late goal by Sergio Aguero deep into extra time ensured that Manchester City won their first English league title in 44 years on Sunday.

The goal scored in the fourth minute of extra time ensured that City won the title from their neighbours, and defending champions Manchester United, on superior goal difference.
Going into the final game of the season both Manchester teams were equal on points, with City ahead on goal difference, United visiting mid-table Sunderland and City hosting relegation threatened QPR. United looked to be doing their part when Rooney scored on the 20th minute at the stadium of light, but City quickly responded with a goal of their own through Zableta ensuring that both Manchester teams went into the half time break leading their respective games.

The second half saw a quick equaliser by QPR through Djibril Cisse but this seemed to be undone when QPR captain Joey Barton got sent off in the 55th minute before Jamie Mackie shocked the football world with a header in the 66th to put QPR ahead. City threw all their resources at a determined QPR defence but it seemed to be all in vain as United finished their match, winning 1-0, with city losing 2-1. Two goals in the final five minutes at the Etihad, through Edin Dzeko and then Aguero, ensured that City completed a magnificent comeback to be crowned league Champions of England.

In the battle for Europe, Arsenal came from behind to win 3-2 at West Bromwich Albion and Tottenham overcame Fulham 2-0 to grab the last two remaining Champions League spots. While a miserable 3-1 lose by Newcastle at Everton ensured that the Toon will have to make do with Europa League football next season.

At the foot of the table, already relegated Wolves and Blackburn both lost their games to Wigan and Chelsea, respectively, and were joined by Bolton who could only manage a 2-2 draw in their game against Stoke City.
