Defending World Cup champions South Africa kicked off their latest World Cup Campaign with a narrow but necessary victory over Wales yesterday in Wellington to add furtehr sparkle to a so far glittering World Cup. The Springboks (as the South African rugby team is affectionately known as) were made to work hard for a opening World Cup victory and were pegged back constantly by a hardfought welsh team coming off a solid 6 nations tour. The Northern Hemisphere must have feared an avalanche as teh springboks scored their first try within 2 minutes but they did well to push the South Africans back. Needless mistakes by the Springboks and injuries to both Victor Matfield and Jean De Villiers must have given the Welsh the feeling that it was their day, only for Francois Hougaard to score in the dying minutes. Springbok Coach Peter De Villiers blamed teh boks narrow escape on their lack of precision " I don't think we stuck to our directness in the game. Our first try came from being very direct and our second try too,we had just reward on being direct and I think we took it too wide on some occasions without enough cleanness at the breakdowns, which they flooded."
New Zealand kicked off the 2011 rugby showpiece with a convincing 41-10 win over Tonga on Friday and the weekends matches followed in the same vein as favourites England and Australia registered victories over Argentina and Italy respectively. There were also victories for Fji, Ireland and France.
leaving many fans salivating at the mouth in anticipation for many more monster clashes to come
