Montpellier beat the billionaires

Posted by Kyle A. Zeeman on Friday, May 25, 2012 Under: Football

On the outside, Montpellier triumph in winning France's ligue 1 may fade into irrelevance in a world of European football and the big money leagues of England and Spain, but to the football world the little side from southern france's  victory over Auxerre ,to win the french title from the challenge of PSG, represents a resistance to the way football is going, a spit in the face of the billionaires ruling football.

Billionaire owner's involvement in football may not be a new thing in football but it has become such a trend in recent years that many fans around the world have felt it has cheapened football. It happened in England with Chelsea and then Manchester City, and its happened in South Africa with Mamelodi Sundowns

Although Sundowns continue to struggle in the shadows of expectation ,which saw them finish 4 in the PSL this season, Chelsea have won the Champions league and Manchester City the English Premier League title. In fact, a brief look at newly crowned league winning sides across the world, from Norway to Asia,  reveals a common connection of a wealthy owner who have financially invested heavily in their team.

Its no wonder then that when John Utaka smashed the ball into Auxerre's net 16 minutes from time on Sunday evening, the football world celebrated with. Not so much as a victory for the little french side as it was football against the billionaire.
