Posted by Kyle A. Zeeman on Saturday, May 19, 2012 Under: Football

Benni McCarthy scored two goals in the second half against Golden Arrows, to hand Orlando Pirates the 2011/2012 ABSA Premiership title.

Pirates opened the scoring with a goal in the 26th minute through Captain Lucky Lekgwathi, before Arrows scored two goals in two minutes to go before Sagweni scored five minutes before half time to go into the break 2-2. Pirates responded shortly after the restart with a headed goal from McCarthy after good positioning from the long throw.

McCarthy who spent his first season back in South Africa, sealed the victory with a late goal in stoppage time to hand Pirates the victory and the title of best football team in South Africa.

“The youngsters have kept me on my toes and I’m enjoying my football, when the ball went into the area everyone knew it was my place and I was just lucky to score. This title is for the fans” said McCarthy after the match.

When asked about what more Pirates could win after winning back to back trebles, Pirates chairperson Ivan Khoza called on his team to go on and win in Africa and bring the CAF Champions league to Orlando Stadium.
